Holmstrom was drafted in the sixth round (49th overall) by Winnipeg in the 1996 college draft. He saw limited action with Winnipeg for 1996 and 1997 and was released in Marchl of 1998. Holmstrom was then signed by Hamilton in April of 1998, but did not play any games for them.
