Bob Heck was born in South Bend Indiana and served in the United States Marines during World War II on an aircraft carrier. After the war, Heck went to Purude where he started in all four years. Heck played in the Blue-Grey bowl in his senior year in 1948 and on a college all-steam against a pro team. After graduating, Heck played for the Chicago Hornets of the AAFC (All American Football Conference) in 1949 - the AAFC was a forerunner of the NFL. Heck played six games for the Toronto Argonauts in 1950, but his season was cut short when he was summoned back for duty in the United States Marine Corps. Heck served in Korea and was decorated for his bravery. While in the armed services played both football and was a champion boxer. Heck was also a good baseball player and played on a militrary all-star team against a Japanese team at Tokyo Stadium. Heck r eturned to the Toronto Argonauts in 1952 for four games.
