Ed Harrington, nicknamed Hercules, toiled at defensive end for the Toronto Argonauts for 8 seasons from 1963 to 1971. After winning an East All-Star at defensive end in his second season in 1964, Harrington was released by Toronot early in 1965. Harring stayed in Toronto, playing with the Toronto Rifles of the other CFL - the Continental Football League, and rejoined the Argos when they purchased his contract in September of 1967. It was a good deal for the Argos ad Harrington would go on to win another 3 East Division All-Stars (1968, 1969 and 1970) as well as 3 CFL All-Stars in those same seasons. Harrington was described as a gentle man off the field, but on the field, he was one of the toughtest and most intense players in the league. There were few defensive stats kept during the years Harrington played, so there are no tackle or quarterback stats to support Harrington's greatness, but he was one of the top defensive ends of his era as indicated by his All-Star selections. Harrington scored three career touchdowns on fumble returns, which is more than many offensive players have totalled in their CFL careers. For much of Harrington's career with the Argos, the Toronto teams was not that terribly good though that was certainly not the fault of Harrington. Toronto did make it to the Grey Cup in Harrington's final season in 1971, the year of the Leon McQuay fumble, but Harringont missed most of the season and the Grey Cup with an injury. Harrington was named an All-Time Argo in 2010. Ed Harrington passed away on November 26, 2011.
