Bert Haigh started his football career with Toronto Balmy Beach of the ORFU in 1938. After two seasons with the Beeaches, Haigh joined the Ottawa Rough Riders for three seasons (1940-42). The Big Four / IRFU suspended play after the 1941 season due to the war, but the Rough Riders played one more year in 1942 in an Ottawa city league. Haigh joined the Ottawa police force in late 1941, and because of manpower shortages on the police force was unable to play in 1943. Haigh returned to football with the Ottawa Trojans of the ORFU in 1944, and when the Ottawa Rough Riders returned to action in 1945, Haigh switched back to them. Haigh played with the Rough Riders from 1945 to 1949. Haigh won three East (Big Four / IRFU) All-Star selections at End in 1946, 1947 and 1948. IN thos same three seasons, Haigh was also a first team All-East selection where players were chosen from the IRFU, ORFU and college ranks. In addition, Haigh was named to Ted Reeves's All-Star team in 1946. Reeves was a former player and journalist who picked what might be considerd an unofficial All-Canadian squad (official CFL / Canadian All-Stars were not picked until 1962). In the era that Haigh played, players went both ways. Besides catching passes on offence, Haigh was also a tough defensive player and was a strong punter.
