Lee Grosscup was born in Santa Monica, CA and went to college at Utah. Grosscup was drafted by the New York Giants in tthe first round (tenth overall) of the 1959 NFL College Draft. Grosscup saw limited action with the Giants over three seasons before being released. Grosscup then had tryouts with Minnesota, Oakland and San Francisco before getting another chance in New York with the Titans of the new AFL. Grosscup came North to the CFL in 1963 to join Saskatchewan, but his timing was bad as the Ron Lancaster era had just started.
