Mike Gray went from not being able to make his high school football team in Ottawa to starting as a wide receiver for the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL. It wasn't that Gray didn't have talent, he had plenty of speed, but his play was described as erratic. Following high, Gray went to the University of Toronto and again had problems, not making the team in his first two seasons. Things got better and Gray was drafted by Calgary in 1966 as a defensive back and he made the team despite not playing in any exhibiton games in 1966. After spending a season in Calgary, listed as a backup running back (!), Gray was traded to Montreal in 1967 along with Barry Randall for Bob Paramore. Gray saw almost no action in 1967, despite dressing for 11 games with the Alouettes. Suddenly in 1968, Gray was used at flanker by the Als and responded with 20 catches, three for touchdowns.. Early in the 1969 season, Gray was rerleased by the Alouettes and signed by the BC Lions where he had 13 catches in 11 games.
