Coming out of Texas U., Herb Gray came to Canada and the CFL in 1956 and stayed for an outstandng ten year career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Gray played mainly defensive end, and he won six West All-Stars in consecutive years from 1957 to 1962 and one CFL All-Star in 1962, the first year CFL All-Stars were awarded. Gray also won a West All-Star at guard in his final season in 1965. Gray was named the Outstanding Lineman in the CFL in 1960. There were no defensive tackle or quarterback sack stats kept during the years Gray played, but he did record 14 career fumble recoveries, 2 career interceptons and 4 career blocked kicks. Gray scored two touchdowns, those coming on his only two career interceptions. Gray played in six Grey Cups with the powerful Winnipeg teams of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Gray and the Bombers won four of them (1958, 1959, 1961 and 1962) and losing two (1957 and 1965). Herb Gray was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1983.
