Grant had tryouts with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL before coming to the CFL. HIs first stop was in Saskatchewan who signed him as a gree agent in April of 1994, but released hm before the season started. Grant then had a tryout with the Baltimore Stallions in 1994, but was released before playing any games for them. Grant finally broke through into the line-up on his third attempt when the expansion Birmingham Barracudas signed him in April of 1995. Grant had a monster year for the Barracudas, catching 84 passes for 1559 yards and 11 touchdowns to earn a Southern All-Star honour. With the folding of the U.S. based teams, was a first round drft pick in t he dispersal draft by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Grant, however, could not recapture the magic with Hamilton as he caught only 18 passes in 9 games.
