Mel Gillett was born in Vernon, BC,but moved with his parents to Oregon when he was nine. Gillett played his high school football in the States and spent one year an Lewis and Clark, but his Canadian birth classified him under the rules of the day as a non-import and made him attractive to CFL teams. Gillett signed with the BC Lions and played two seasons with BC. Gillett was a halfback and played mainly on defence for the Leos. Following his retirement as a football player, Gilett was a milworker at Consolidated Pine, retiring in 1999. Mel Gillett passed away on September 15, 2013 at the age of 78.
