Gates signed with the San Antonio Texas in March of 1995 and played 17 games for them that year as a backup defensive back and kick returner. Gates ran both a punt and a kickoff back for touchdowns in 1995. After the folding of the U.S. based teams, GAtes was drafted by Ottawa in the eighth round of the dispersal draft.
