George Depres

George Depres was born in Winnipeg and was a multi-sport athlete, playing hockey, baseball and football. Depres's favorite sport, however, was football. Depres played high school football at St. Paul's Colege where he and Paul Cholakis teamed up and became known as the "touchdown twins". Depres played one season for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1949. Depres remained active in sports and football after a knee injury ended his football playing career. While with the Bombers, Depres was an assistant coach with the Winnipeg Rods junior football team and then took over as the head coach. As the Rod's coach, Depres went to five Canadian championship games, winning in 1955, 1956 and 1961 and losing twice (1954 and 1959). Depres also helped to revive football at the University of Manitoba in the 1960s. Depres continued to help the Bombers long after his playing days ended. Depres served for 15 years as the General Manager of Winnpeg Enterprises who managed Winnipeg Stadium where the Bombers played, and he was known to help the Bombers out financially when they needed it. Depres is a member of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fafe for his play withh the 1955 Winnpeg Rods championship team (in 1996) and as a builder in 2006.Depres was also a member of the committee that organized the first world junion hockey championship. George Depres passed away on March 2, 2008.
