Cureton played college ball at UCLA from 1953 to 1955, starring at offensive guard and on the defensive line. In 1954, UCLA won the national championship, and Cureton was an honorable mention All-American. In 1955, Cureton was team captain, a consensus All-American and chosen to play in the Hula Bowl. In 2005, Curetorn was named to the UCL Sports Hall of Fame. Cureton came to the CFL to play pro football in 1956 with the Toronto Argonauts. In his rookie season, Cureton recorded 4 interceptions, and was an East All-Star at defensive guard (there were no CFL All-Stars until 1962). Cureton moved to Ottawa for three years from 1957 to 1959, winning an East All-Star at offensive guard in 1958. From 1960 to 1964, Cureton played with Hamilton, winning three more East All-Star honours: 1961 at linebacker, 1962 at offensive guard and 1963 at offensive tackle.
