Bob Cosgrove had a long career as a lineman in Canadian football stretching from 1938 to 1949. Cosgrove was an American and played his college ball at Montanta. Cosgrove is best remembered as a center but played pretty much every position on the line, center, guard and tackle (snap, inside and outside in the terminology of those days). Cosgrove started with Calgary in 1938 and played three seasons there (1938-40). While with the Broncs (pre Stampeders), Cosgrove also started to get involved in coaching and was the line coach in 1939 and 1940.. In 1940, playing center, Cosgrove was the runner-up as the MVP in the WIFU. (West). Cosgrove moved East in 1941 to play for the Toronto Argonauts and then when the Big Four / IRFU suspended play because of the war in 1942, Cosgrove moved across town to play for Toronto Balmy Beach where he was the runner-up for the ORFU MVP award and named an All-Star at Tackle (Middle).. In the RCAF in 1943, Cosgrove played for the Toronto RCAF Hurricanes in the ORFU and this time won the league MVP. There is no record of Cosgove playing football in 1944, but with the war over in 1945 Cosgrove returned to Toronto Balmy Bach and was an ORFU All-Star and a first team All-East selection at center. Cosgrove was back with the Beaches in 1946, but then moved to the Toronto Indians as a playing coach in 1947. I 1948, the Indians and the Beaches merges and Cosgrove was back with Balmy Beach.
