After playing junior football (Verdun Invictus and Ottawa Sooners*), Joe Colvey was an All-Star in the Ontario College league in 1973 and 1974 at Carleton University as a running back. Colvey was signed by the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1975 and after initially being released by the team after training camp, returned to play 10 games in both 1975 and 1976 with the Rough Riders. Colvey finished the 1976 season by playing one game for the Montreal Alouettes. Colvey started 1977 with Montreal, but was released in July before the regulars season started and picked up by Ottawa. Colvey remained with Ottawa until September when the Riders added receiver and punter Gerald Kunyk to the roster. Colvey was picked up by the Calgary Stampeders for the remainder of the 19777 season and scored his only career touchdown as a Stampeder on a five yard run.. * The Sooners were and are a junior team, but in 1970 abd 1971, due to lack of junior teams to play against, the Sooners played in what was called a senior (intermediate) league.
