Coming out the University of Maryland, Fred Cole was a sixth round draft pick of the Chicago Bears in the 1959 NFL college draft. Cole was a co-captain of the Maryland team in his final season and played in both the Blue-Grey and Senior bowls in 1958 and was an honorary All-American as named by the Associated Press in 1958. Cole joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1959 and played five games at tackle. With the creation of the AFL in 1960, Cole returned to the U.S. to play for the San Diego Chargers.
