Coming out of the University of West Virginia, Cobourne played in 2003 with the Detroit Lions of the NFL. In 2004, Cobourne was allocated by the Lions to Cologne in NFL Europe, and spent 2005 on the practice roster of the Miami Dolphns. Cobourne signed as a free agent with Montreal in January of 2006. Cobourne spent his first couple of seasons with the Alouettes working mainly on special teams. Cobourne led the Als in special teams tackles in his rookie season with 21 and had close to two thousand yards in kick returns including a 95 yard missed field goal return. Cobourne also backed up at running back and linebacker. In 2008, Cobourne took over as the starting running back Cobourne won East All-Star honours at running back in both 2008 and 2009 and a CFL All-Star selection in 2009 when he rushed for a career high 1214 yards. Cobourne won two Grey Cups with Montgreal in 2009 and 2010 and was named the outstanding player in the 2009 Grey Cup. Looking to get younger, the Alouettes released Cobourne prior to the start of the 2011 season, and he was signed as a free agent by Hamilton. Cobourne had a good season for Hamilton, just barely missing the thousand yard mark again with 991 yards rushing, but he was initially released by Hamilton prior to the 2012 season with the signing of former B.C. Lions running back Martel Mallett, but. Hamilton recalled Cobourne when Mallett was injured in training camp and out for the season. Coming out of training camp though, Cobourne was watching from the sidelines after losing the starting job to rookie Chevron Walker. As so often happens though in football, Cobourne's story was not quite over. When Walker went down with an injury, the Tiger-Cats turned once again to Cobourne to replace him. Cobourne responded with an excellent season, rushing for 737 yard in just tein games, a pace that would have put him well over a thousand yards in a full season. It still wasn't enough though and in February, 2013 Cobourne was released again by Hamilton as the free agent season opened and teams began trimming players and salary. Avon Cobourne joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders as an assistant coach for running backs for the 2014 season.
