Steve Charbonneau was drafted in the first round (sixth overall) in the 1997 CFL College Draft by the Montreal Alouettes. Charbonneau saw a lot of action on special teams in his first few years with 21 special tackles in his first two seasons. Charbonneau was also getting more time at defensive tackle and in 2000 he had a career high of 8 quarterback sacks. Charbonneau played five seasons with the Alouettes (1997-2001) before being released. Charbonneau was picked up by the Edmonton Eskimos where he played another five seasons (2002-2006). Charbonneau returned to Montreal for 2007, but did not dress for any games when he was struck down by a mysterious illness. Charbonneau finished with 28 career quarterback sacks and 9 fumble recoveries. Charbonneau made it to four Grey Cups, one with Montreal and three with Edmonton. Charbonneau and the Als lost to BC in 2000, and Charbonneau's second trip to the Grey Cup also came up short in 2002 when Edmonton lost to of all teams, Montreal. Charbonneau got even in the win department in Grey Cup appearances with wins in 2003 and 2005 while with Edmonton, again both coming against Montreal.
