After playing his college football with the University of Montanta, Carteri was a first round draft pick of the Ottawa Rough Riders in the 1979 CFL College Draft. Carteri was traded by Ottawa to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in July of 1979 for slotback Ian Moffard. After two seasons with the Western Riders (1979-80), Carteri was traded to Hamilton in May of 1981 for defensive lineman Lyall Woznesensky. After two years (1981-82) Carteri was released by Hamilton prior to the 1983 season. Carteri then signed with Montreal and played with the Als in 1983. Montreal released Carteri before the 1984 season, and Carteri did not play that year. Carteri resigned with his hometown Saskatchewan Roughriders for one final go in 1985. After retiring from football as a player, Carteri has stayed involved in the CFL as the Roughriders colour man on radio broadcasts.
