Jerry Campbell started and finished his pro career with the Calgary Stampeders, but he is best remembered for for the time inbetween, which was the bulk of his career with Ottawa. Campbell played 11 seasons in the CFL from 1966 to 1976. In those 11 seasons, Campbell won 7 East All-Stars (1968 to 1970 and 1972 to 1975), and 7 CFL All-Stars (1969-75)*. Two key defensive stats, tackles and quarterback sacks, were not kept during the years Campbell played, but what stats there are are still very impressive. Campbell recorded 34 pass interceptions and 19 fumble recoveries in his career. Most defensive backs don't achieve career totals near what Campbell managed. In 1972, Campb ell had 8 interceptions which was tied for second best i nthe East. In many years that would have been enough to lead the division, but Al Brenner had a super year with 15. In 1973, Campbell had 5, with more than twice the yardage of 1972 and that was also good to tie for the second most picks that year in the East. Campbell played his college ball at Idaho, and signed with the Calgary Stampeders in 1966 despite interested from several NFL teams. He played two and a half seasons for the Stampeders as a starter before being released half way through the 1968 season. Campbell was not rleased for lack of performance, he simply got caught up in the import ratio as the Stamps needed help on the offensive line, and added an import guard. It was wWith the Rough Riders that Campbell's career really took off. Campbell teamed up with anothe rHall of Famer Ken Lehman, and Canadian Wayne Giardino to form an outstanding linebacking corps. Campbell played in and won three Grey Cups with Ottawa (1968, 1969 and 1973). The 1968 cup was the year he was traded from Calgary, and it was Calgary that Ottawa beat in the Grey Cup thatg year. Jerry Campbell was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1996. *In those years, someone could be selected a CFL All-Star without being a division all-star, so in 1971 Campbell was selected a CFL All-Star despite not being an East All-Star. |
