The fact that Hugh Campbell is in the Canadian Hall of Fame is hardly surprising. What may be surprising to some, however, is that he was elected as a builder and not a player. Campbell is one of the few people in CFL history who could probab ly have been elected easily in both catagories. Perhaps what prevented Campbell's election as a player was the shortness of his career, only 6 seasons from 1963 to 1969 (he didn't play in 1968), all with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Campbell's nickname as a player was "Gluey Hughie" which meant that if a pass came near the receivier, he would likely catch it. In his rookie season, when the CFL tracked passes thrown to a receiver, Campbell caught 30 of the 31 passes thrown to him for a 96% completion rate. The nickname was obviously well deserved. After his rookie season, Campbell reeled off three straight thousand yard receiving seasons from 1964 to 1966 with 62, 73 and 66 catches in those season. Campbell won West All-Star honours in all three seasons and was an All-Canadian in 1965 and 1966. 1966, of course was the year the Riders won their first Grey Cup, and Campbell led the West in scoring with 102 points on 17 touchdown receptions. 1967 was a bit of an off yea for Campbell as he had "only" 42 cathces for 710 yards and he retired for one season in 1968. Campbell returned to play one more season in 1969, with 45 catches and 851 yards to win West All-Star honours once more. After his retirment, Campbell went on to be extgremely successfull as a coach and General Manager in Edmonton, which led to his induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame as a builder.

The 2 fumble recoveries in 1965 would probably have been OFR, but the CFL did not track them seperately then.
