Gregg Butler played in four Grey Cups in his first four seasons in the CFL. Butler and Emonton lost to Montreal in 1977, but then won three straight (1978-80). Actually, Edmont went on to win two more in 1981 and 1982, but Butler left Edmonton in 1981 to join the Alouettes. It might have been a move that Butler regretted as the 81 Alouettes were awful. Butler had picked up three straight West and CFL All-Star selections with Edmonton (1978, 1979 and 1980), but after leaving Edmonton the injury bug struck him and he played only 7 games for Montreal in 1981 and again only 7 games in his final season with Winnipeg in 1982. Butler had 11 career interceptions, with 7 of them coming in 1979 which was good for a tie for third in the West. Butler was also an accomplished kick returner, used mainly on punt returns. In 1978, Butler was third in the West in both kickoff return yards (653) and punt return yards (442). In 1979, Butler led the West in punt return yards with 623. Gregg Butler returned to the CFL as an assistant coach in 1998 with Toronto, 1999-2001 with Montreal, 2006 with Winnipeg and 2007 with Hamilton.
