Garland Boyette

Linebacker Garland Boyette was born in Orange, Texas, and played for Grambling, where he selected for the Little All-America team. He tried out  for the 1960 Olympic US decathlon team and barely missed qualifying. He signed as a free agent with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1962 and played with them through 1963. Released by the Cards in September 1964, the joined the Montreal Alouettes, playing two seasons. In July 1966 he signed a new three year contract with the Als, but was put on waivers a week later after a disagreement with the coaching staff. He moved to the Houston Oilers in August of that year and played with the club through 1972, and was selected to play in the1968 AFL All-Star game. He retired after the 1972 AFL season but was coaxed out of retirement in August of 1973 by the Oilers, but was cut by the team in September prior to the start of the season. In 1974 he  played for the Houston Texans of the WFL. Midway through the 1974 season the Texans moved to Shreveport and became the Steamer. Boyette finished his career with the Shreveport in 1975. A very versatile and talented player, he played guard, defensive end, outside linebacker, and middle linebacker. Boyette is the uncle of NFL football player and pro wrestler Ernie Ladd.
