Bird was a fifth round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1983. After being released by St. Louis, he had tryouts with the San Diego Chargers and the Cincinnati Bengals before signing with Edmonton in October of 1985. Bird was released by Edmontin in June of 1986, and signed with Montreal in July.
