Ray Bernard was an outstanding linebacker at Bishop's. In 1990, Bernard was a Quebec Conference All-Star and a second team All-Canadian selection. In 1991, Bernard won another Quebec All-Star, was named a first team Canadian All-Star and was named the top defensive player in Quebec. Ray Bernard was named to the Bishop's Wall of Distinction in 2008. Bernard was drafted in the second round (tenth overall) of the 1992 CFL College draft by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Bernard played three seasons in Green and White (1992-94), and a couple of quite remarkable seasons in much different ways. In his rookie season, as tends to happen with most Canadfian rookies, Bernard toiled mainly on special teams and racked up an impressive 32 special teams tackles. Bernard's hustle on special teams earned him a regular spot on defence in 1993, and he came thorough with 92 defensive tackles to lead the entire CFL. Injuries held Bernard to just 7 games in his third season in 1994, and he became a free agent after the season. Bernard signed with the other Rough Riders in Ottawa and played two seasons for them (1995-96). With the folding of the Otgtawa franchise, Bernard was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders in the dispersal draft. It was a short five game say in Calgary, before Bernard was traded to Montreal for safety John Kalin. Bernard recorded 3 career interceptions and 8 career fumble returns, scoring a pair of touchdowns on fumble returns.
