Sheldon Benoit was born in Toronto, and went South to play his college ball at Western Kentucky. Benoit was then drafted in the second round (11th overall) of the 1995 CFL college draft by the Toronto Argonauts. Benoit played one season with the Argos in 1995, recording 8 defensive tackles and 12 special teams tackles. The Argos released Benoit in June of 1996, just before the start of the season, and he was signed as a free agent by Saskatchewan in August. After fnishing the 1996 season with the Riders, Benoit was traded to Winnipeg in May of 1997 as part of a three for three deal. Going to Winnipeg along with Benoit were cornerback Nick Ferguson and offensive guard John James for linebacker K.D. Williams, safety Jason Mallett, and defensive lineman Horace Morris. Benoit was released by the Bombers in June before the season started, and he then signed with BC in August, 1997. Benoit only played one game for the Lions in 1997 and was released. After not playing in 1998, Benoit signed as a free agent with the Montreal Alouetes for 1999 and played two seasons for the Als (1999-2000). Beonoit had his best season with the Als in 2000, recording 33 defensive tackles. Benoit was released by Montreal prior to the 2000 season and then signed with Edmonton where he had the longest stay of his career, four seasons from 2000 through 2004. Benoit played in three Grey Cup games, losing in 2000 with Montreal and with Edmonton in 2002, before getting a win while with Edmonton in 2003. Benoit Rejoins Edmonton - September 2, 2004
