Nick Benjamin was born in Trinidad, but had his football training in Canada, playing junior football in Oshawa before going on to play college ball at Concordia. With Concordia, Benjamin was twice named both a conference and All-Canadia. Benjamin is a member of the Concordia Sports Hall of Fame. Benjamin was a first round draft pick and first overall of the Ottawa Rough Riders in the 1985 CFL College Draft. In his rookie season, Benjamin, an offensive guard, was named the East Rookie of the Year and runner up as the CFL Most Oustanding Rook ie. Benjamin remained with Ottawa until August 1989 when he was traded to Winnipeg for defensive lineman Willie Fears and offensive lineman Brad Tierney. Benjamin remained with Winnipeg until the end of the 1993 season, winning a Grey Cup with the Bombers in 1990. Benjamin returned to Ottawa to play four games with the Rough Riders in his final season in 1994. Nick Benjamin passed away on August 20, 2007.
