Bob Bateman started his college career at Vermont (1974) and transferred to Brown after Vermont dropped their football program. Brown was not exactly a powerhouse in the Ivy League, but had one of thei rbest seasons ever with Bateman at QB in 1975. Bateman was an Honorable Mention for All-American in 1975 and became a seventh round draft pick of the Cincinnati BEngals in 1976. After his release by the Bengals, Bateman joined Montreal where he dressed for one game, but did not see any action. After retiring as a player, Bateman went into coaching at the minor, high school and college levels.

There is a rather odd story about Bateman in the Harvard Crimson newspaper about the November 15, 1975 game between Harvard and Brown. The story alledges that Bateman had played previously not just at Vermont, but at UTEP (University of Texas El Paso) under another name and was an illegible player.

Bateman is a member of the University of Vermon Sports Hall of Fame. He was inducted in 1986 and is considered to have been the best, and ironically last, quarterback for Vermont.
