Auggie Barenechea was a fourth rounddraft pick by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats out of the University of Calgary in 2004. Barrenechea had a bit of an up and down CFL career. He started his CFL career with Hamilton in 2004, playing mainly on special teams with 24 defensive tackles and 18 more on special teams. Barrenechea then took over the starting middle linebacker job with Hamilton in his second season in 2005, a bit of a rarity at the time for a Canadian, and piled up 96 defensive t ackles. From that high, Barrenechea lost his starting job in 2006 and was then traded to Edmonton partway through the 2007 season. Barrenechea went to the Eskimos along with a fourth round draft pick for Jason Nedd. After finishing 2007 with Edmonton, mainly on special teams, Barrenechea returned to a starting role with Edmonton in 2008 and recorded 68 defensive tackles. A free agent for 2009, Barrenechea returned to Hamilton and played three more seasons with the Tiger-Cats, almost exclusively on special teams. In his final season in 2011, the Tiger-Cats utilized Barrenechea as a blocking fullback (no carries or pass receptions). Barrenechea retired after the 2011 season.
