The "Big Z" is one of the best remembered kickers in CFL history as he was among the vanguard of the new breed of dedicated kickers that took hold in the early 1970s. Andrusyshyn was born in Germany, raised in Oakville, Ontario, and played college ball at mighty UCLA before being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL in the ninth round of the 1970 NFL draft. Andrusyshyn actually went to UCLA on a track scholarship, having represented Canada in the javelin at the 1966 Brithis h Empire (now Commonwealth) Games in Jamaica. While with UCLA, Andrusyshyn became famous for the strength of his leg. Anything inside the 50 yard line was fair game for the soccer style kicker, and in one game Andrusyshyn kicked fieldgoals of 57 and 62 yards - at the time the professional record was only 56 yards. After his release by the Cowboys, Andrusyshyn signed with Toronto in November, 1970, and took over as the punter for the Argos in 1971. In 1973, Andrusyshyn added the placekicking duties and had the first of five consecutive hundred point seasons. A highlight of those years was an 108 yard punt in 1977 which set a CFL record. Andrusyshyn was released by the Argos after the 1977 season and signed with the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL for the 1978 season where he was thei regualr punter. The Chiefs released Andrusyshyn in August of 1979, and he signed with Hamilton to finish the season. Andrusyshyn was released by Hamilton after the 1979 season and he rejoined Toronto for 1980 where he won East All-Star honours as a placekicker.as he hit on 30 of 42 field goal attempts for a career high 71.4% success rate. Andrusyshyn played 1981 with the Argos and started the 1982 season before being released in September and later signing with Edmonton. Edmonton released Andrusyshyn after the 1982 season and he then signed with the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL. After three seasons (1983-85) in the USFL, Andrusyshyn returned for one last gasp in the CFL in 1986. Andrusyshyn signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in August of 1986, but never played a game for the green and white as they looked elsewhere for thei rpunting. An injury to Roy Kurtz in Montreal opened the door for Andrusyshyn in October of 1986 and the Big Z kicked 55 points in just 6 games.
