Ted Alflen

Ted Alflen was a top player at Springfield College, but went undrafted by the NFL  Alflen signed as a free agent with Denver in 1969, but broke his arm in game eight.  Alflen signed with New England in 1970, but was released by the Patriots.  Going into the 1970 playoffs, Montreal released running back Dennis Duncan and receiver Bob McCarthy for curfew violations and need replacements. Despite playing college ball as a running back, Montreal brough in Alflen as a receiver.  Montreal finished third in the East and beat the Argos in the semi-final to reach a two game total point faceoff with Hamilton.  Alflen dressed for the first game against Hamilton and then for the Grey Cup.  Alflen is best remembered for the touchdown he scored in that 1970 Grey Cup.  Winning 7-0 and at the Calgary ten yard line in the first quartrer, Als's coach Sam Etcheverry decided to gamble and called a running play for Moses Denson.  Calgary sniffed out the play and in the midst of being tackled, Denson threw a pass into the endzone for Alflen.

The following is an excerpt from an article written on his induction to the Springfield College sports hall-of-fame.

Alflen was a star two-way football player at SC. He was an honorable-mention All-American and all-New England selection at running back, and was also voted to the all-New England team at strong safety.

Alflen’s school single-game record of 36 points vs. Tufts in 1968 still stands. He set seven SC bests during his career, including rushing yards in a game (206), touchdowns in a season (12), longest run from scrimmage (87 yards) and consecutive extra points (16). Alflen was the first player in SC history to score 100 points in a season, totaling 112 in 1968. He was a starter at safety on the undefeated (9-0) 1965 team coached by SC Hall of Famer Ted Dunn G’47.

After graduation, Alflen competed in the National Football League as a running back and strong safety. Alflen also played for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League (CFL), where he played in the 1970 Grey Cup (Super Bowl of the CFL) and scored a touchdown.
