Ted Alflen was a top player at Springfield College, but went undrafted by the NFL Alflen signed as a free agent with Denver in 1969, but broke his arm in game eight. Alflen signed with New England in 1970, but was released by the Patriots. Going into the 1970 playoffs, Montreal released running back Dennis Duncan and receiver Bob McCarthy for curfew violations and need replacements. Despite playing college ball as a running back, Montreal brough in Alflen as a receiver. Montreal finished third in the East and beat the Argos in the semi-final to reach a two game total point faceoff with Hamilton. Alflen dressed for the first game against Hamilton and then for the Grey Cup. Alflen is best remembered for the touchdown he scored in that 1970 Grey Cup. Winning 7-0 and at the Calgary ten yard line in the first quartrer, Als's coach Sam Etcheverry decided to gamble and called a running play for Moses Denson. Calgary sniffed out the play and in the midst of being tackled, Denson threw a pass into the endzone for Alflen.
