Armstrong played his college ball at Oklahoma State, and was a draft pick of the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles in 1947. As a receiver and defensive back, Armstrong help the Eagles win NFL championships in 1948 and 1949. Armstrong came North to the CFL in 1951, and led the West in receiving. Armstrong was a good two way player, winning All-Star honours on both sides of the ball in his career. In 1951, he was a West All-Star at offensive end, and in 1953, he was a West All-Star at DB (there were no CFL / Canadian All-Stars in those years). After his r etirement, Armstrong got into coaching. His first coaching job was with Houston of the NFL as an assistant in 1962. Armstrong then became a head coach with Edmonton for 6 seasons in the 1960s. Armstrong returned to coach as an assistant with the Minnesota Vikings in 1970. In 1978, Armstrong became the head coach of the Chicogo Bears, where he had a 30-35 record in his four seasons before being fired. Armstrong then spent 8 seasons as an assistant coach with the Dallal Cowboys.
