Joe Zaleski

Joe Zaleski was the starting quarterback at Dayton for three years and then was with the the Los Angelas Rams for one season (but didn't dress for any games) before coming to the CFL.  Zaleski played three years with Winnipeg (1952-54) where he earned the nick-name "Black Magic" for his ball handling abilities.  Zaleski was the backup QB and a defensive back with Winnipeg.  Zaleski joined Montreal for one year in 1955 and then spent two seasons with Sarnia of the ORFU as a player-coach in 1956 and 1957. Zaleski's move into coaching was only logical as he had started coaching highschool football with St. Paul's in Winnipeg while playing there.  Zaleski returned to Winnipeg in 1958 where he served as an assistant coach for nine years until 1966.  In 1967, Zaleski took over as the Bomber's head coach, a position that Zaleski held for hree years (1967-69).  Unfortunately, it was not a good time for the Bombers as Zaleski compiled a 10-37-1 record. After his release by Winnipeg, Zaleski spent one year as an assistant coach with Edmonton in 1971.
