A native of Sarnia, Steve Wormith played his college football in the States at Brown (1965-68) and was a draft pick of the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1969. Wormith had a rib injury in training camp with the Rough Riders in 1969 and was released just before the season started. Wormith played college ball for Carleton in 1969 and was then picked up by the Montreal Alouettes in 1970. Since Wormith was with Montreal the entire season, he is often listed as a member of the team which won the 1970 Grey Cup even though he did not get into a regular season or playoff game. Wormith had a knee injury in training camp and spent the season on the injury reserved list without getting into a game. Wormith had another tryout with the Als in 1971, but was released during the pre-season.
