The Montreal Alouettes announced on Monday that the club has re-signed a pair of non-import defenders in safety Daryl Townsend and defensive back Michael Carter. Both players have agreed to new three-year deals with the club and will be valuable assets to team's success in 2014.

Townsend (6'1", 198 lbs.) was named the Alouettes Most Outstading Special Teams Player of the year in 2013 after leading Montreal in special teams tackles with 16, despite an absence of five games for personal reasons. The 28-year-old had arguably his best outing in the CFL last season on August 22 against the B.C. Lions when the Windsor, Ontario native matched his career-high four tackles on special teams in a gutsy effort against the Alouettes' western foes.

"Daryl has fast become one of the best special teams players in the league," explained Alouettes General Manager and Head Coach Jim Popp. "He is a good person and works hard to make sure that he is prepared to help his team week in and week out. He is always ready to fill in where needed."

Townsend, who played his CIS Football with the Windsor Lancers, amassed 41 special teams tackles in only his first two seasons with the Alouettes. "I'm very excited to continue my career with the Alouettes and to be able to play for this great city and organization," said Townsend.
