Smith had an excellent rookie seasin in 2006, taking a run at a thousand yards rushing, despite playing only 10 games. Smith ended up with 887 yards rushing and added a spectacualr 51 catches for another 420 yards. Smith had started the season on the practice roster, but got his chance to play when regular RB Anontio Warren missed a key block that allowed the Rider's Jackie Mitchel a hard shot at Lions QB Dave Dickinson. Smith folowed up his rookie season with an impressive second season, running for 1510 yards to lead the CFL in rushing and capture Western and All-Canadian All-Star honours.
