Ralph Goldston

Ralph Goldston was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL and played four years for them (1952-55) before coming North to the CFL.  Goldston played ten years in the CFL from 1956 to 1965, all but the last hear with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and finishing his career with Montreal in 1965.  Goldston's career straddled the transition from two-way players to specialized offensive and defensive teams, and Goldston had the talent and versatility to flll in pretty much any role the Tiger-Cats needed from him.  In his rookie season, Goldston was used mainly used as a receiver with only 18 carries, but 20 receptions for 397 yards and 7 tuchdowns - better than one touchdown per three catches.  Goldston won an East All-Star that season (there were no CFL All-Stars until 1962) but as a defensive back where he recorded one interception. In 1957, Goldston was used more as a running back with 76 carries for 341 yards, second best on the Tiger-Cats.  Goldston also had 7 interceptions to earn his second East All-Star at defensive back.  Goldston saw more limited action on offense in the next two years, but pulled down two more East All-Stars at defensive back in 1958 and 1959 to run his total to four such selections.  The nine interceptions Goldston had in 1959 were good enough to lead the East that year.  While Goldston had been seeing less time on the offensive side of the ball, that changed again in 1961 when he caught a career high 25 passes for 414 yards.  Goldston finished his career with 32 career interceptions including at least one in each of his ten seasons.  Goldston's longest interception return was a 66 yard ramble that came in his final season while playing with Montreal in 1965.  Goldston played in seven Grey Cups in his nine years w ith Hamilton, winning two of them in 1957 and 1963.  After retiring as a player, Goldston became an assistant coach with Montreal from 1966 to 1969. Goldston would continue his coaching career after leaving the Alouettes, coaching first at he high school level in Ontario in football and basketball.  Goldston then went on to be an assistant coach at Harvard and Colorado, and then in the NFL as an assistant coach with the Chicago Bears.  Goldston also served as a scout for the Seattle Seahawks.  Goldston was selected to the Youngstown State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986. Ralph Goldston passed away on July 9, 2011.
