Chris Gaines was a fifth round draft pick of the NFL Phonenix Cardinals in the 1988 NFL Draft. After his release by Phoenix and tryouts with Miami and Tampa Bay, Gaines signed as a free agent with Toronto in September 1989. After playing 4 games in 1989, Gaines had a super season in 1990 with the Argos, recording 117 tackles and 6 interceptions. 1991 wasn't quite as good as Gaines missed four games, but still rang up 72 tackles and two more interceptions.
