Doug Flutie

Doug Flutie's style of play was tailor made for the CFL, it just took him a few years to find his way north.  Flutie first came to prominence at Bostton College for his famous "Hail Mary" pass, but most considered him too small to play in the NFL.  Flutie was a territorial draft of the USFL New Jersey Generals in 1985 and an eleventh round draft pick of the Los Angelas Rams of the NFL in the same year.  After a year on the development roster of the Rams, Flutie was traded to the Chicago Bears in 1986 along with a fourth round draft pick in 86 for third and sixth round draft picks in the 87 draft.  The Bears traded Flutie to New England in October of 1987 for an eithr round draft pick and then Flute was released by New England after the 1989 season.  Flutie was signed by the BC Lions for the 1990 season and it took him a season to adjust to the CFL as he completed 52.8% of his passes in his rookie year, throwing more interceptions (19) than touchdowns (16).  In 1991, however, Flutie began an assault on the record books, putting up some of the best numbers ever in a single season.  He threw 730 passes, completeing 63.8% of them for an amazing 6619 yards and 38 touchdowns.  Those nubmers earned Flutie the first of this six All-Canadian selections and the first of his six Most Outstanding Player awards in the CFL.  As a free agent, Flutie signed with Calgary in 1992, playing for seasons for the Stampeders from 1992 to 1995.  Flutie reeled off three straight All-Canadian / Most Outstanding Player seasons with Calgary and likely only missed another one in 1995 when injuries restricted him to just 12 games.  Just a few of his numbers include another 6000+ yard season passing in 1993 and 48 touchdown passes in 1994. A free agent afte the 1995 season, Flutie signed with the Toronto Argonauts and in 1996 and 1997 added his fifth and sixth All-Canadian and Most Outstanding Player awards, comleting well over 60% of his passes and throwing for over 5000 yards in both seasons. In both those seasons, the Argos under Flutie won the Grey Cup to give him three championships in eight years as he won one with Calgary in 1992.  Sadly for Argo and CFL fans, Flutie became a free agent after the 1997 season and returned to the NFL with the Buffalo Bills.  In three seasons in Buffalo (1998 to 2000), and four more with San Diego (2001-2004), Flutie showed a small man could play QB in the NFL. Flutie's successful return to the NFL helped pave the way for other CFL players to get a shot in the NFL and boosted the CFL's image in the States.  In a 2006 poll of sports writers, Doug Flutie was named the #1 on a list of the 50 greatest CFL players of all time.
