Jerry Eugene Fields was an Ohio boy, born in Ironton, Ohio, playng high school football at Coal Grove, Ohio, and his college ball at Ohio State under Woody Hayes. Fields was the backup quarterback in 1958 and went into the 1959 season as the #1, but suffered an arm injury in the first quarter of the opening game.  Tom Matte took over as the quarterback and Fields ended up playing in 1960 mainly on defense as a linebacker.  Fields was drafted by the New York Titans (who became the Jets) in the 13th round of the AFL draft and played 19 games over two seasons for the Titans in 1961 and 1962.  Fields joined the Montreal Alouettes for one game in 1963, and returned to play 13 games in 1964.  Drafted as a linebacker by the Titans, Fields also saw action as a running back and at quarterback.  Fields had 18 carries and 3 pass receptions for Montreal in 1964, including one catch for at touchdown.
