Vernon Cole

Cole joined Winnipeg in training camp in 1960, but didn't see much action during the regular season. An injury to Kenny Ploen's hand in the West Final against Edmonton gave him a chance to play. It was a best of three series and Cole started game 2 in place of Ploen. Winnipeg lost game 2 to Edmonton 10-5, evening the series, and setting up a showdown in the third game. Ploen was back in the lineup and late in the game, Winnipeg needed a first down to run out the clock and win the game. Ploen carried the ball for the first down, but was hit in his injured hand and fumbled and set up a game winning fieldgoal by Tommy Joe Coffey. From 1961 to 1963, Cole was in the Air Force where he played QB. Cole returned to Winnipeg in 1964, but the Bombers had 9 QBs in camp, and he was traded to Montreal in July.
