Ken Charlton

Ken Charlton is a Hall of Fame running back / flying wing who came out of the Regina Junior program.  Charlton played from 1941 to 1954, but only fragmentary stats are available before 1950.  Charlton played three years of Junior football, with the Regina West End Juniors in 1938 and with Regina Park Dale in 1939 and 1940.  Charlton moved up to the Regina (as they were known then) Roughriders in 1941 and was named a West All-Star at Flying Wing in his rookie season.  The West or WIFU suspened play because of World War II from 1942 through 1944, but Charlton played in a city league in Winnipeg in 1942 for the Winnipeg RCAF Bombers and then with the Regina All-Service All-Stars in 1943.  Charlton next played three years in Ottawa (1945-47), picking up East All-Star honours in 1945 and 1946 at Flying Wing (there were no CFL All-Stars until 1962).  Charlton then returned to Saskatchewan to play for seven years from 1948 to 1954 with two more West All-Star honours as a running back in 1948 and 1949.  While most of Charlton's stats from his prime are unavailable, you can get some hints from the stats that remain.  In 1950, the first year that there are good stats for, Charlton had 498 yards rushing with a 6.4 yard per carry average and 24 catches for another 458 yards and a 19.1 yard average.  Another hint of Charlton's talent can be glimpsed in his punt return stats.  In 1951, Charlton had 41 returns and 9.4 yard average.  This is in the era of no-blocking on punt returns.  In 1953, Charlton had 34 returns and a 12.1 yard average on punt returns. Charlton was also an excellent two way player, recording 8 career interceptions, coming in his last three years when interception stats were kept. Besides all of that, Charlton also did punting on the side.
