Cavness had a free agent tryout with the Houston OIlers of the NFL in 1993, but was released in training camp. The San Antono Texas signed Cavness in April of 1995 and he played all 18 games for the Texans, picking off three passes in 1995. With the folding of the US based teams, Cavness was drafted in the second round of the dispersal draft by Edmonton and played 6 games for the Esks before being released on September 4, 1996.
