Dieter (Ralph) Brock

Dieter (or Ralph as he was known by in the early part of his CFL career) was not your prototypical CFL quarterback.  Brock was certainly not a running QB, but he had one of the strongest arms in the history of the CFL and flourished in the league at a time when it was changing much more to a pass focused offense.  Brock began his career in 1974 in Winnipeg and stayed with the Bombers until partway through the 1983 season, finishing his career in 1984 with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.  Chucke Ealey was the Bomber QB in 1974 when Brock arrived on the scene and Dieter saw limited action in his rookie year.  When Ealey was traded to Hamilton in 1975, Brock took over as the #1 pivot for he Bombers.  Brock's stats in 1975 (only 47.5% completion rate) were not indicative of his future., and Brock steadily improved with experience over the next few seasons.  Brock's best seasons were the trio of seasons from 1980 to 1982 in which he threw over 500 passes in each of those seasons for more than 4000 yards per season with completion percentages of 59.1, 62.5 and 57.9%.  Brock was named a Western All-Star in all three seasons and All-Canadian in 1980 and 1981.  Brock also won the Most Outstanding Player award in the CFL in 1980 and 1981.  In 1983, Brock was traded to Hamilton for anothe rfuture Hall of Fame QB, Tom Clements.  In his final season in 1984, Brock completed 57% of his passes and just missed hitting 4000 yards passing (3966) on 561 attempts.  Brock took a pounding in that final season in Hamilton, being sacked 73 times.  For all the pounding he took, Brock was amazingly durable as he only missed 6 games in the 11 years he played in the CFL. Dieter Brock was named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1995.
