John Beaton was a west coast boy, born in Vancouver and playing his college ball at Simon Fraser. Beaton started his CFL Career with Edmonton in 1973, playing there until halfway through the 1976 season when he went to Montreal. In 1978, Beaton made his way home when he was traded to BC for Larry Uteck, and played his final three seasons with the Lions. While he didn't garner any all-star recognition, Beaton had a solid eight year career with 20 career interceptions 5 fumble recoveries. Beaton's best season was his second in the league in 1975 when he had a career high 5 interceptions. Beaton made it to four Grey Cups. With Edmonton, Beaton lost in both 1973 and 1974, before winning against Montreal in 1975. Beaton got his second ring in 1977 with Montreal over his former team, the Eskimos.
